A restorer rebuilding her life takes on a village’s beloved pavilion, where an old lucky coin and a legend of love seem to promise more than a fresh start.

The story

After caring for her sick parents and giving up her work as a restorer, Katja Sterner is left with only their lucky coin. Hoping to begin again, she follows its connection to the quiet village of Herzfeldt, where her father once found it near the Star Pavilion. The once-beautiful structure is now dilapidated and slated for demolition. Katja offers to restore it for the cost of tearing it down and stays with Luise, a real-estate agent she befriends. As the work brings her into the lives of the villagers—including reserved wheelchair user Pia and Thomas, who appears interested in Katja—she must navigate friendships and feelings while trying to save the pavilion.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Katja Sterner had cared for her sick parents and given up her job as a restorer to do so. Now, after their deaths, she is left with nothing. The only thing she has is her parents’ lucky coin. So she decides to make a fresh start in another town. On a sudden impulse, she travels to the quiet little village of Herzfeldt. The lucky coin she found again came from there: her father had once found it near an old pavilion. But when Katja arrives, she discovers that the once-beautiful Star Pavilion has fallen into disrepair and is due to be demolished. Without giving it much thought, Katja offers Mayor Leo Alvarez to restore the pavilion for the amount it would cost to tear it down. In the meantime, she stays with Luise, a real-estate agent she had met near the pavilion and had spontaneously befriended. Her neighbor is Pia Selbmann. She has been in a wheelchair since she was 16, after a fall, and is generally rather reserved. Nevertheless, Katja’s natural manner quickly helps her connect with Pia. Katja’s work soon attracts the villagers’ attention. They fondly remember the pavilion’s glorious days, as it is even said to have magical powers when it comes to love. Katja’s parents got engaged there, too. Katja soon notices that Luise’s neighbor Thomas seems interested in her, but knowing that Luise has her eye on him, she does not want to come between them. She even helps Luise get closer to Thomas. To that end, she invites not only Thomas but also his sister Pia to dinner. Selflessly, she gives Pia some of her clothes so she’ll have something “decent” to wear. The mayor unexpectedly invites himself along, and makes no secret of the fact that he likes Luise. Even so, he does not dare to tell her directly how he feels. Pia, on the other hand, tries to bring Katja and Thomas together, but Katja won’t let her, out of loyalty to Luise. Thomas, however, does not understand: he is not in love with Luise and has no intention of changing that. After days of work on the pavilion, Katja is nearly finished, but now the roof is worrying her. Restoration alone will not be enough; it needs costly repairs. To pay for them, Katja sells her car. Her selflessness is soon rewarded in a wondrous way: as she puts the final brushstrokes on the starry vault, its ceiling suddenly breaks open and countless gold coins rain down. Katja stretches out her work apron and catches them all in it. She hands the treasure over to the mayor, who takes it to the museum. The whole village celebrates at a big party to mark the pavilion’s reopening. Everyone is happy, and the magic of the love pavilion begins to work again: Luise realizes that the mayor has secretly been in love with her for a long time, and they confess their feelings to each other. At last, Katja can choose Thomas with a clear conscience, and as a finder’s reward for the treasure she receives startup capital that allows her to go into business for herself. Katja is happy.
