Full plot (contains spoilers)
Rudi and his friend Andy hitchhike toward Lake Wörthersee, where Andy is supposed to start work as a cook at the Eschenhof Hotel. They are picked up by the young Eva Wiedemann, who is supposed to fill in for her sister Margit at that very hotel for a week. Margit had been due to start there as a director, but she is away for a week with her boyfriend, whom she intends to marry during that time without her strict mother finding out. Eva, meanwhile, is supposed to attend the girls’ boarding school not far from the hotel, but she sends Andy there to tell the headmistress that Eva has come down with measles and will be recuperating at the Eschenhof for a week. The headmistress is away too, however, and during her absence the deputy head, Theo Schatz, is in charge. He mistakes Andy for Eva and puts him in a room with two other young women. They soon realize Andy is male, but think he is trying to trick them. So they make him play the female role all the more, and he has to iron all the laundry belonging to the girls at the boarding school. Rudi and Eva wonder why Andy hasn’t come back, but they soon have other problems: Eva has to learn Margit’s office duties, while Rudi is mistaken for the cook and desperately tries to teach himself the basics of cooking. The hotel manager, Trude Moll, is delighted by the two newcomers’ incompetence. She has long planned to sell the hotel and its land to the American millionaire Bruno Kargel, who wants to demolish the hotel and search for oil on the site. But Trude’s business partner, Eddy Stubenrauch, flatly refuses to sell. Trude now intends to drive the hotel into ruin to finally change Eddy’s mind. The band “The Tears,” led by Hans Müller, checks into the hotel. Eva had already taken a dislike to them on the way there. Hans, however, proves to be a lifesaver: he has fallen in love with Eva, is a trained cook, and also learns about Trude and Bruno’s plot. The two of them warn Eddy. By various roundabout means, Rudi also finds out that Andy is being kept locked up at the girls’ boarding school. When Eva tells him that her mother, Irene, worried by some strange phone calls, is on her way to the boarding school to check that everything is all right, Rudi gets there first. Disguised as a woman, he takes ‘daughter’ Andy out of the school. The real Irene Wiedemann arrives at the same time and is mistaken for an impostor. Horrified, she heads to the Eschenhof Hotel. Margit and her boyfriend, now a married couple, arrive there too. When Irene sees both her daughters safe and sound and hears about the marriage, she gives in, and they all reconcile. Eva and Hans become a couple too. Meanwhile, Trude has hired a gang of thugs to smash up the Eschenhof Hotel. With the help of fortifying malt pills from the boarding-school headmistress’s desk, Rudi and Andy develop superhuman strength and beat the thugs into fleeing. When the pills wear off, the thugs lie in wait for them again, and Rudi and Andy make a run for it, with the men hot on their heels.
