Before marrying Grete Wernicke, the hotel owner’s daughter, he first wants to have enough money of his own. He gets a job for the winter season at Berlin’s finest wine bar and, through his acquaintance with the daughter of a wealthy member of the Reichstag and various fortunate circumstances, gains access to the city’s wealthiest circles, where he plays the part of a man-about-town and conceals his real occupation.
