Full plot (contains spoilers)

It is unclear to what extent the German and English versions differ. The content of the English version was outlined by the well-known critic Mordaunt Hall in the New York Times in August 1929, on the occasion of its showing at the “The Little Cameo” cinema. The commander of a German warship is married to an Englishwoman. Before the outbreak of war in 1914, he competes with his English friend over their artillery skills. The German commander’s wife feels neglected because of her husband’s professional commitment. A serious conflict arises between the German commander and one of his officers, who has fallen in love with the commander’s wife. Just as they are about to duel, war breaks out and the ships put to sea. The crew members’ love affairs are also addressed. When members of the crew are wounded in the Battle of Jutland, they are subsequently treated in a field hospital.
