A folding-kayak expedition down the Enns brings flirtation, rivalry, and romantic complications to a group of adventurers.
The story
After Kurt survives a storm while crossing the English Channel in a folding kayak, his achievement is celebrated, and he recounts the adventure. Soon he and his girlfriend Inge join a group trip down the Enns, with Kurt leading the party. The travelers enjoy outdoor freedom, pranks, races, and romance. Elsewhere in the group, hairdresser Gisel sets out with her friend Gustel, another kayak enthusiast, but becomes bored while he assembles his boat. Inge happens to meet them and takes an interest in Gustel. When Gisel's boss Fritz arrives, the four rearrange their kayak pairings, leaving the jealous Kurt to accept the change as their shared journey begins.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Kurt crosses the English Channel in a folding kayak and gets caught in a storm. At home, his girlfriend Inge anxiously follows the weather service on the radio. Eventually the weather calms down, and Kurt reaches the other shore safely. His achievement is celebrated at length, and Kurt tells everyone what he experienced. Shortly afterward, the two of them set off with a group on a folding-kayak trip down the Enns. Kurt is the group leader. Once they reach the Enns, the group enjoys the freedom of life in nature—with a dog and girls. They play pranks (pulling late sleepers out of their tents) and have playful races, and there is no shortage of romance, free from conventions. Meanwhile, the hairdresser Gisel arranges a trip down the Enns with a friend, Gustel, who is also a folding-kayak enthusiast. She boasts about it to her boss, Fritz. When they reach the Enns, Gustel takes an especially long time to assemble his presumably homemade folding kayak. Gisel gets bored, and, hoping he will pay her more attention, strips down to her negligee in front of him, but he is not particularly impressed. The next morning, Gisel complains that there is no water for washing, so Gustel throws her into the water. She fights back and screams for help because she cannot swim, but it turns out the water is only waist-deep. By chance, Inge comes over from the other camp. She is taken with Gustel. When the hairdresser Fritz unexpectedly turns up as well, and Gisel is more interested in him anyway, they agree that Gustel will ride in Inge’s two-person kayak, while Fritz and Gisel take Gustel’s two-person kayak. The group leader, Kurt, reluctantly permits this arrangement, jealous. The joint trip down the Enns begins.
