Full plot (contains spoilers)

Lady Mary Watson, a British aristocrat of excellent reputation, falls in love with an attractive Arab man. Despite her friends’ warnings, she follows him to his homeland of Morocco, where their two worlds quickly collide: their differing values, represented here as those of the Occident and the Orient. Ali Enver Bey already has a wife and feels bound by customs and traditions marked as Oriental (= archaic). Mary soon finds herself in his harem as his very own “white slave” and eventually, after rebelling against Enver, ends up in a brothel. After a prolonged period of suffering, she manages to escape with the help of the European doctor Dr. Warner. But Ali Enver Bey is unwilling to give her up and pursues her. He is killed in the ensuing chase. With the doctor at her side, Lady Mary eventually returns to England, and they marry.
