A family’s Christmas dinner plans are disrupted when their children grow attached to the talkative goose meant for the roast.

The story

Opera singer Ludwig Löwenhaupt buys a goose from a village farmer six weeks before Christmas, intending for his family to fatten it for a holiday roast. His three children soon grow fond of the bird, whom they name Gustje, and no longer want to eat her. The goose can talk, and what Ludwig regards as meat becomes a pet the children take to bed and talk to. As Christmas approaches, Ludwig still plans to slaughter the goose, setting up a conflict between his dinner plans and his family’s growing affection for their new companion.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

The opera singer Ludwig Löwenhaupt wants a proper Christmas roast, so six weeks beforehand he buys a goose from a farmer in the village for the family to fatten up. He has no idea that the three children will grow fond of the animal, which is christened Gustje, and will no longer want to eat it. The goose can also talk. What was initially “five kilos of meat” locked in the cellar becomes, after its “liberation,” a pet that the children take to bed with them and talk to. Shortly before Christmas, Father Löwenhaupt still intends to slaughter the goose. But his family protests and his conscience speaks up, so he does not go through with it. He does, however, try to kill her with a sleeping pill. But after being plucked, Auguste wakes up again. She is given a sweater and is now allowed to stay with the family for good as a pet. When the grandmother buys two carp, Peter wants them to be allowed to live, too.
