Back from a prisoner-of-war camp, Jakob Formann turns his work with the US Army into an audacious start in business.

The story

After the Second World War, Jakob Formann returns home from a prisoner-of-war camp and finds work as an interpreter for the US Army in Linz. He uses the contacts he makes there to strike out on his own, swindling the Americans out of 40,000 eggs and starting a poultry farm. The farm is based on an estate that belonged to Heinrich Himmler during the Third Reich. With this enterprise, Formann’s economic miracle can begin.

His business is based on the farm that belonged to Heinrich Himmler during the Third Reich. Jakob Formann’s economic miracle can begin. Formann quickly rises to become a successful corporate executive in the young Federal Republic. He becomes a construction contractor and publisher. Formann lives in extravagant luxury. Only when the oil crisis brings the country its first recession in the early 1970s does the rise of the petit-bourgeois Formann come to an end.
