When Leon vanishes, the Wild Soccer Bunch pursue a vampire theory into a fortress where their friendship and a high-stakes soccer match are put to the test.

The story

After defeating the Wolves and the Silver Lights, the Wild Soccer Bunch celebrate in the forest. Leon and Vanessa pledge eternal devotion, but the next day Leon disappears. Vanessa, already frustrated by his past letdowns, doubts him, while Raban and Joschka suspect vampires are responsible. The group sets off to search for Leon, following a trail that eventually leads to a ruined fortress known as the place beyond the horizon. A hooded figure claims Leon is there and warns the friends of danger. They press on, encounter the vampire group called the Shadow Seekers, and are challenged by their leader, Darkside, to a 3-D soccer match.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

After the Wild Soccer Bunch defeat the Wolves and then the Silver Lights (in the previous installment, DWK4 – The Attack of the Silver Lights), they celebrate their triumph in the forest. One evening by the lake, Leon and Vanessa, who have been in love with each other for as long as they can remember, pledge eternal devotion to one another. Unbeknownst to them, two sinister-looking figures are watching. The next day, Leon suddenly disappears. Vanessa is angry and no longer trusts him, since he has let her down several times before. Raban and Joschka, however, are convinced that Leon has been kidnapped by vampires. Just recently, Raban’s self-built warning belt—which Vanessa mockingly calls the “ghost buckle”—lit up red, which means “vampire.” Although the others are reluctant to believe Raban and Joschka’s theory, they set off on their motorcycles to search for Leon. But there is no trace of him, and even after ten months there is still no sign of him. By now, the Wild Soccer Bunch have reached a half-ruined fortress of steel and concrete, which turns out to be the place beyond the horizon. A strange, hooded figure tells them that Leon is there, but is “dead as a stone.” Despite the hooded man’s warning that the same thing will happen to them as happened to Leon, the bunch search the fortress and eventually encounter the vampires at night. The vampires call themselves the “Shadow Seekers.” The Wild Soccer Bunch want to know where Leon is, but Darkside, the vampires’ leader, first challenges them to a 3-D soccer match (Soccer Six in 3 Dimensions). The vampires win the match two to nothing, thanks in part to their ability to “zip”—to “beam” quickly from one place to another. The bunch are consequently held captive by the vampires. Darkside seduces Vanessa and persuades her to forget Leon and become a vampire like him. She agrees. The other Wild Soccer Bunch members—Maxi, Nerv, Klette, Raban, Joschka, and Markus—are also seduced, and Blossom bites Maxi, but only briefly, so he is only partially transformed. The Wild Soccer Bunch try to escape and, with the hooded man’s help, just barely succeed—all except Klette. The hooded man first takes the others to safety. He shows them Leon, who was bitten by Blossom and then turned to stone in the sunlight, which is harmful to vampires. At his own home near the Shadow Seekers’ fortress, the hooded man shelters the Wild Soccer Bunch and shows them his secret weapon, a “gun” that fires beams of sunlight. He intends to use it to take revenge on the vampires for Leon. That night, the hooded man and Maxi take turns keeping watch, but when Blossom comes, Maxi allows himself to be fully transformed. The others and the hooded man now consider him a traitor, and the vampires capture them all. Meanwhile, Vanessa and Klette, who—after much back and forth—let themselves be bitten by the two smallest vampires, Jeckyl and Hyde, as the pair try to win their favor, have been taken prisoner in the vampire fortress. They manage to escape and also find the petrified Leon. Vanessa discovers a letter in his hand saying that he can be released only if she kisses him in the brilliant light of the rising sun. Vanessa persuades Darkside to play one final soccer match in his stadium, called the “Gate of Hell.” The prize is Leon, and the Wild Soccer Bunch will also be freed. The Wild Soccer Bunch fall behind at first, but manage to win the game 3–2. However, Darkside once again plays dirty: he uses the hooded man’s secret weapon, which shoots rays of sunlight, forcing Vanessa to hide so that she will not turn to stone. Maxi narrowly saves a shot on goal just before it crosses the goal line—a shot Markus would not have been able to stop after an earlier shot—but Maxi is caught in the weapon’s sunlight in front of the goal and turns to stone. Vanessa must first ask Leon to forgive her for letting Darkside seduce her. When he forgives her and she kisses him in the light of the now-rising sun, he comes back to life, and Vanessa is no longer a vampire. Blossom kisses Maxi, whom she is now in love with, and he awakens too; both are no longer vampires. The other members of the bunch also kiss vampires and fall in love: Markus kisses Düsentrieb, Raban kisses Terry, Joschka kisses Marry, and Nerv is forced to kiss Klette, though he finds it more disgusting than anything. Once they are all outside, however, Nerv realizes that Klette was wearing a metal collar and therefore was not a vampire at all. Darkside and the two young vampires, Jeckyl and Hyde, remain in the vampires’ lair in their eternal darkness, while the others enjoy their freedom in the sunlight.
