A meeting aboard a Venetian vaporetto begins a story of longing told through winter snapshots.
The story
In the winter of 1999, eighteen-year-olds Silvestro and Camilla meet aboard a vaporetto in Venice. Their story of longing is told through snapshots set across ten consecutive winters.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
The title itself is a summary of the plot: ten random moments, all set in winter, taken from ten consecutive years, tell in a series of snapshots a story of longing between two young people, Silvestro and Camilla. The story begins in the winter of 1999 in Venice, when the two eighteen-year-old protagonists meet on a vaporetto. From there, it unfolds over ten years in snowy, chaotic Moscow (Camilla is a Slavic studies student specializing in Russian theater), a strangely industrial and unusual Venice, and the hills of Valdobbiadene in the Veneto region. These ten years represent a kind of sentimental education for the two of them, from the age of eighteen to twenty-eight, during which chance, tensions, or the fears of the moment always prevail over this “frozen” love, which is never consummated.
