As Dikkertje starts school, his daily visits to his giraffe friend Raf become harder to fit into his life.
The story
Dikkertje lives beside a zoo, where his grandfather works as a zookeeper. He visits Raf, a giraffe born on the same day as him, every day. After Dikkertje celebrates his birthday, his parents take him to school for the first time. Raf cannot go along, since giraffes have already learned everything they need to know. Dikkertje gradually gets used to school and makes his first friend, but he has less and less time to visit Raf. This leaves him caught in a conflict of loyalties between his growing school life and his friendship with the giraffe.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Dikkertje Dap is a little boy who lives next to a zoo. His grandfather works as a zookeeper, and Dikkertje visits his friend Raf the giraffe every day. Raf was born on the same day as Dikkertje. One day, Dikkertje has his birthday, and the next day his parents take him to school for the first time. It also turns out that Raf is not allowed to go along, since giraffes have already learned everything they need to know. After a while, Dikkertje gets used to school and makes his first friend. This creates a conflict of loyalties as he has less and less time to visit Raf. In the end, Dikkertje comes up with a trick: using his grandfather’s keys, he lets Raf escape from the zoo and rides on his back to school. There, he introduces Raf to all the children in his class and to his teacher. In a subplot, the teacher and Grandpa grow very fond of each other, until Grandpa interrupts a romantic moment because he “has to be with Margot.” The teacher is disappointed and acts very coldly, until it turns out that Margot is a tapir from the zoo.
