The story
Didier “Travolta” Graindorge is a 40-year-old unemployed man living with his mother in a working-class neighborhood of Le Havre, burdened by debt after a bad deal. His eight-year-old son, from a previous relationship with an Englishwoman, will visit France only if Didier can offer him a vacation abroad. When former friend Jean-François “Jackson” Civette and his partner reopen the Gin’Fizz nightclub, they launch a disco competition with a trip for two to Australia as its prize. Didier sees a chance to reunite the Bee Kings, his former disco group, and persuade his old bandmates to compete. He also seeks the help of dance teacher France Navarre to regain their former skills.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Didier “Travolta” Graindorge (Franck Dubosc), 40, unemployed and heavily in debt after a bad deal involving waterbeds, lives with his mother (Annie Cordy) on Rue du Grand-Large, in a working-class neighborhood of Le Havre. He has an eight-year-old son from a previous relationship with an Englishwoman. The boy will come to France only if his father offers him a vacation abroad. Meanwhile, Jean-François “Jackson” Civette (Gérard Depardieu), a former friend of Didier’s, and his partner, Jaqueline Bouchard de la Marinière, “the Baroness” (Isabelle Nanty), have just reopened the nightclub of their youth, the Gin’Fizz. To revive it, they organize a disco-themed competition there: the “Gin Fizz Academy,” whose first prize is a trip for two to Australia. This gives Didier the chance to bring back the Bee Kings, the disco group he belonged to under the name “Didier Travolta,” with whom he won dance competitions in the 1980s. He gets back in touch with his former bandmates, Walter (Samuel Le Bihan) and “Neunoeuil” (Abbes Zahmani), to persuade them to enter the competition. Unlike him, the two former companions have jobs. Although they have no personal reason to take part, Didier manages to draw them into the challenge. After many years of inactivity, Didier contacts France Navarre (Emmanuelle Béart), a dance teacher recently returned from New York, to help them regain their former ease.
