A shy notary’s quiet life changes when a cursed portrait of a countess comes to life after he kisses it.

The story

Notary Jan Karas is a shy old bachelor who avoids women and spends some evenings with his friends, Dr. Pakowski and engineer Chadek. The two friends devise a strange game to shield him from women hoping to become his wife. At an auction held at Lucyna Castle for the late count’s belongings, townspeople are especially interested in a portrait of a beautiful noblewoman, but nobody buys it because it is said to be cursed. While they await the young count’s decision about the painting, Karas keeps it at home. Enchanted by the portrait, he spends hours gazing at it, until one day a passionate kiss causes the woman to step out of the canvas.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Notary Karas is a shy old bachelor who successfully avoids women and sometimes spends his evenings with his friends, Dr. Pakowski and engineer Chadek. He has no idea that both friends want to lure him into a strange game that would protect him from the female traps set by women who hope to become his wives. One day, local townspeople gather at an auction organized by notary Jan Karas at Lucyna Castle to acquire the late count’s belongings. The greatest interest is in a portrait of a beautiful noblewoman, but no one buys it because, they say, it is cursed. They must wait for the young count to arrive and decide what to do with the portrait; in the meantime, Karas keeps it at his home. Enchanted by the woman’s beauty, Karas spends hours in front of the portrait. One day, in a burst of passion, he kisses it, and the woman suddenly comes to life and steps out of the canvas. She introduces herself as Countess Blanka of Blankenberg and has no intention of returning to the canvas. What is the notary to do with the painting—and the beautiful woman of flesh and blood?
