Full plot (contains spoilers)

Ava and Dallas return to his hometown for his brother's funeral, where a confrontation between Ava's father, Clarence, and Dallas's mother, Linda, creates immediate tension. After a heated argument, Dallas's family takes his body home while Ava remains with her family. Later, Ava tries to convince Dallas to return to Atlanta with her, but he refuses, claiming she is trying to change him. After a series of confrontations with his brothers and a man from her past, Benji, Dallas eventually admits his mother forced him to kill his abusive father. Later, at a restaurant, Dallas publicly announces he wants a divorce. Ava eventually finds peace and begins to move on, even spending a night with Benji. When Dallas later finds them together, a fight ensues. Following a series of escalating incidents, including an assault on Ava's mother and an injury to her father, Ava is forced to confront Dallas one last time. When he breaks into her home and threatens her life, she shoots him in self-defense. The film ends with Ava and her family feeling safe and free.
