Full plot (contains spoilers)
Jacek, the director of a student theater group in Gdańsk, meets Margueritte, the daughter of the French consul. When she asks him to hold her dog, Jacek reveals that he is infatuated with the Frenchwoman. He invites her to play tennis, and she agrees before driving away in a luxury limousine. From then on, the two begin meeting regularly. Jacek turns out to be hopelessly in love with Margueritte and neglects his duties, but the girl does not return his feelings. When two of Jacek’s friends—talented tennis players and polyglots—show up during a game, Margueritte loses interest in Jacek, who, embarrassed, quickly leaves. When Jacek and Margueritte visit a church, they act out a wedding scene, and the girl declares that she has no desire to get married because she does not want to lose her attractiveness. Despite Jacek’s pleading with Margueritte to stay in Gdańsk, she tells him that she is leaving the city. The girl lies to Jacek, saying, “Goodbye, see you tomorrow.” One day, when Jacek goes to the consulate, he learns that Margueritte has left for good. Jacek returns to the theater group and his friends, but he cannot come to terms with the loss of his love.
