The story

During the Second World War, a boy and a girl lose their family in an air raid. Hoping to find safety at a peaceful place they have heard about, they set out believing it may be the boy’s uncle’s house. Along the way they encounter a Black American pilot who has been forced to parachute from his plane after it is shot down. Though the frightened children make escape more difficult, the pilot cannot abandon them. Meanwhile, both German forces and Yugoslav partisans know he survived, setting off a race between the two sides to reach him first.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

During the Second World War, a boy and a girl lose their family in an air raid. Having heard of a peaceful place and thinking it might be the boy’s uncle’s house, they decide to set out in search of it. The children then meet a Black American pilot who has been forced to parachute out after his plane was shot down. The children seem so frightened that the pilot cannot bring himself to abandon them to their fate, even though they reduce his chances of escaping. But both the Germans and the Yugoslav partisans know that the pilot has survived. A race then begins between the two sides to find him first. When the children and the pilot finally reach the uncle’s house, they find it empty, and the Germans manage to capture the pilot. But the Yugoslav partisans attack and free him, and he joins their ranks. During the final battle between the two forces, he is mortally wounded and orders the children to run away. After the house explodes, the children decide to keep looking for another valley, the true Valley of Peace.
