World War I. For three days, the German submarine C. 1 is in a life-or-death struggle as it heads home across the Atlantic after a military operation. The homeward voyage turns into an enemy mission when the C. 1 spots a French steamer on the surface. The freighter heads straight for the German U-boat and tries to ram it. But the German submarine captain manages to evade it at the last moment. The next day, an enemy cruiser attacks the U. C. 1. Once again, the German skipper acts with great care and thereby saves his men’s lives. The last of the three days proves to be the most dangerous for the crew: while passing through the English Channel, the submarine must get past a dangerous minefield. Its propeller becomes entangled in a steel net. The crew already believes its fate is sealed when a young sailor volunteers to dive into the sea and cut through the net. The operation succeeds, and the entire crew returns home to the Fatherland. The cook has even found his great love: he brings the beautiful Jeannette home from a captured ship, and she will become the new hotelier’s wife at his side.
