Full plot (contains spoilers)
Gerrie (Ton Kas), a retired mechanic for the RET, has COPD and lives in Portugal’s Algarve, where the climate is better for his lungs. Every year, he returns to Rotterdam for a few days for medical checkups and practical matters. During his stay, he lodges with his stepdaughter and spends time during the day with his 45-year-old son, Dick (Guido Pollemans), who struggles with anxiety and panic attacks. Dick hopes to grow closer to his father, but their relationship is marked by poor communication and mutual misunderstanding. Their conversations are limited to everyday trivialities, while tensions remain beneath the surface. On their outings around Rotterdam, they visit waiting rooms, government offices, and places from Gerrie’s past. Dick discovers, among other things, that his mother’s grave has been cleared. When Gerrie says he wants to move permanently to Portugal, Dick becomes upset. He fears this may be his father’s last visit, but cannot find the words to express it.
