Full plot (contains spoilers)
Hanna is a doctor working at a hospital when a patient who has overdosed on sleeping pills is brought to the emergency room. Hanna realizes that the patient is Clarissa, her former best friend, with whom she once spent a vacation on an island when they were nine years old. In the spirit of old times, Clarissa suggests visiting the island again, and Hanna agrees. The two women travel to the island with Hanna’s daughter, Lea, and meet Tim, the caretaker who looks after the guesthouse. He tells Hanna that the two of them should not have come. Hanna learns that Maria, a girl she used to play with, disappeared from the island. Hanna can no longer remember what happened back then and has only vague memories. She befriends Marcus, the island’s fisherman. He also knows the story of Maria and tells Hanna that Gabriela, the fish seller, is Maria’s mother. After Lea leaves her stuffed doll at the fish shop, Hanna goes to pick it up, but Gabriela is nowhere to be found, so Hanna enters Maria’s old room. There she discovers a little necklace that she once gave Maria when they promised to remain best friends forever. Hanna keeps seeing little Maria on the island. Clarissa can see her too, but does not tell Hanna. After Hanna remembers that they used to play in a ruin in the woods as children, she goes looking for it and finds it. Her memories gradually return, and it becomes clear that Hanna and Clarissa must have had something to do with Maria’s disappearance. Maria apparently died in a hole in the ruin. Because of what has happened on the island and in the house, Hanna decides to leave the island with her daughter. However, the ferry is moored at the pier with engine trouble, and Marcus says he will repair it the next day. It turns out that Marcus is Maria’s brother and was also involved in her disappearance: just before the ferry departed back then, Hanna told him where Maria was. But because Maria had destroyed Marcus’s favorite toy shortly before she disappeared, he did not tell anyone. That night, Marcus apparently tries to abduct Hanna, but Clarissa stops him. In the morning, Marcus’s body washes ashore, and Gabriela, his mother, holds Hanna responsible. When Hanna returns to the vacation house, she finds that Tim has kidnapped Lea, supposedly to protect her, as he says. As Hanna and Clarissa try to free Lea, Tim lunges at Clarissa and chokes her. Hanna saves Clarissa by badly injuring Tim with an axe. During the struggle, however, Tim knocks Hanna into a shelving unit, and she loses consciousness. When Hanna comes to, Gabriela tells her that Maria is not dead but alive. Hanna then realizes that Maria has been pretending to be her friend Clarissa the whole time. Hanna goes looking for her daughter, Lea, and encounters Maria at the ruin, where Maria has just bolted the hatch over the hole in which Lea is trapped. Hanna overpowers Maria and ties her up. Maria finally tells Hanna what happened to her. As a child, Hanna had told Clarissa a ghost story about the hole in the ruin. Maria had followed them and was supposed to prove her friendship to the two girls, so they lowered her into the hole. When they tried to pull her back up hours later, the rope snapped. Her mother did not find Maria until days later, because the girls had told no one what had happened. The fear Maria had experienced in the hole led to young Maria being admitted to a psychiatric hospital, and Gabriela told everyone that she had disappeared. While at the hospital, Maria was raped by the attendants and eventually discharged heavily pregnant. After giving birth to her daughter—the girl Hanna kept seeing on the island as “young Maria”—Maria wanted revenge on the two girls from back then. It is revealed that Maria killed Clarissa and later her brother Marcus, because he knew where she was. She also murdered Tim, who had been badly wounded by Hanna, with another blow from the axe to his neck. After Maria finishes her story, Hanna tries to free Lea. As Hanna climbs down into the hole, Maria manages to free herself and cuts the rope Hanna is holding. Hanna later wakes up beside her husband, Johannes, in a clinic, restrained to the bed because she is said to have murdered Tim and deliberately jumped into the pit with Lea. Later, Maria comes into the room, still pretending to Johannes and Lea that she is Clarissa. After Johannes leaves, Maria tells Hanna that she will destroy her life, just as Hanna once destroyed hers. The film ends with a final scene in which Maria, as the ultimate culmination of her revenge plan, has taken Hanna’s place in her family—as Lea’s stepmother and her husband’s new partner.
