A deaf couple must defend their decision to raise their daughter within Deaf culture when doctors and child-welfare authorities challenge their refusal of a cochlear implant.

The story

Two-year-old Mila Ebert was born deaf, as were her parents, and is growing up with her brother using German Sign Language. At a clinic examination, doctors determine that her auditory nerve is intact and that a cochlear implant could be fitted. Her parents, Conny and Simon, refuse the procedure, wanting to communicate through sign language and raise Mila within Deaf culture. The doctors disagree with their decision and contact the youth welfare office, arguing that it risks Mila’s language development. After visiting the family, the office regards the parents’ position as radical and informs the local court. Judge Jolanda Helbig is assigned to decide whether the parents are endangering their daughter’s welfare.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Two-year-old Mila Ebert, like her parents, has been deaf since birth and is growing up with her brother using German Sign Language. During an examination at a clinic, it is determined that Mila’s auditory nerve is intact and that it would be possible to fit her with a cochlear implant (CI). Conny and Simon Ebert refuse to have their daughter fitted with a CI—they want to sign with her and bring her into Deaf culture. The clinic’s doctors do not accept the parents’ decision and contact the youth welfare office, believing that refusing the implant puts Mila’s language development at risk. The youth welfare office then visits the family, and its staff consider the parents’ position radical. The office subsequently informs the local court, and the parents are confronted with the accusation of endangering their child’s welfare. Judge Jolanda Helbig is assigned the case and is to determine whether the parents are endangering their child’s welfare.
