Full plot (contains spoilers)
Lloyd Christmas has been catatonic in a mental institution for 20 years until Harry Dunne discovers Lloyd was faking his condition. Harry needs a kidney transplant and learns his ex-girlfriend Fraida Felcher gave up a daughter, Fanny, for adoption. The duo travels to Oxford, Maryland, to find Fanny, who is now Penny and is traveling to a convention in El Paso, Texas. They meet Penny's adoptive parents, Dr. Bernard Pinchelow and his scheming wife Adele, who is trying to steal Bernard's fortune. Adele and her lover, Travis Lippincott, attempt to kill the duo to secure the fortune. During the trip, Lloyd develops a romantic attraction to Penny and believes he is her father. At the convention, Harry impersonates Bernard. After a series of chaotic events involving a fire alarm, a fake kidney from Mexico, and a revelation that Penny's biological father is actually a deceased friend, Adele attempts to shoot Penny. Harry takes the bullet and is injured. Adele and Lippincott are arrested. In the end, it is revealed Harry was pranking Lloyd about the kidney, and Lloyd's 'kidney' was actually a pork chop.
