The story
Keith Gill, a middle-class financial analyst in Massachusetts, finds solace in the stock market community of r/WallStreetBets, where he shares his views as 'Roaring Kitty.' During the 2020 pandemic, he notices a decline in GameStop's stock and decides to invest his life savings into it. As he live-streams his journey, he joins a growing movement of retail investors. Full plot (contains spoilers)
Keith Gill, a struggling analyst in Massachusetts, gains notoriety as 'Roaring Kitty' on the r/WallStreetBets subreddit. In 2020, he invests his life savings into GameStop stock, which begins to surge as retail investors defy hedge funds like Melvin Capital Management. The success leads to a massive price spike, causing significant losses for institutional investors like Gabe Plotkin. However, the movement faces a crisis when Reddit shuts down the forum, causing panic selling. The trading platform Robinhood subsequently halts trading, leading to a federal investigation where Keith and others are subpoenaed. In the aftermath, the film depicts the fallout: Plotkin shuts down his firm, Robinhood faces lawsuits, and various retail investors deal with the consequences of their gains or losses. Keith eventually retires from the public eye, while his brother Kevin finally receives a new car.
