The story
In 1931, Friedrich Ritter and Dore Strauch flee Germany to seek a new life on the isolated Floreana Island in the Galápagos. They are soon joined by the Wittmers, a capable couple with a young son, and Eloise Bosquet de Wagner Wehrhorn, a wealthy but manipulative woman who plans to build a luxury resort. As the settlers attempt to establish their homestead, the presence of Eloise and her companions introduces tension and conflict. The group must navigate the challenges of isolation and the growing friction caused by Eloise's hedonistic behavior and disregard for the others' resources, testing the resolve and morality of those seeking a sanctuary from their past.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
In 1931, Friedrich Ritter and Dore Strauch flee Germany to settle on Floreana Island in the Galápagos. They are joined by the Wittmers, a family of capable settlers, and Eloise, a manipulative woman who intends to build a resort. Tensions escalate as Eloise's lack of restraint leads to food shortages and conflict. After a violent confrontation where Friedrich kills Eloise and her companions, the survivors hide the bodies. However, the internal strain leads to tragedy: Dore's health fails, and Friedrich dies after consuming contaminated food. Following a period of isolation, the authorities arrive. While the Wittmers remain on the island, Dore eventually leaves for Germany, where she dies in 1943. The film concludes with a series of intertitles detailing the fates of the survivors and the fact that the Wittmers' descendants still maintain a small hotel on the island.
