A young prosecutor’s seemingly clear first case is undermined when witnesses soften their accounts or claim they saw nothing.
The story
Young prosecutor Jessica Maurer’s first case seems straightforward: in broad daylight, two teenagers taunt and beat a Black man on a crowded tram. The assailants are arrested at the scene, while the victim lies in a coma. But witnesses either revise their statements to make them less incriminating or claim they saw nothing, leaving Jessica with a serious lack of evidence.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
The first case of young prosecutor Jessica Maurer seems clear at first glance: in broad daylight, on a tram full of passengers, two teenagers provoke, taunt, and beat up a Black man. The pair of assailants are apprehended and arrested at the scene, while the victim lies in a coma. Despite the seemingly unequivocal sequence of events, there is a lack of evidence because the witnesses either revise their statements to make them less incriminating or claim they saw nothing at all. Jessica stakes everything on a site visit, where all those involved, along with the judge and the defense attorney, gather on a tram to reconstruct what happened.
