The story

At the beginning of the 20th century, orphan Andreas Egger arrives in the Alps and is taken in at farmer Hubert Kranzstocker’s farm. The devout but violent farmer sees Egger as a cheap source of labor; only the elderly Ahnl shows him any care. Egger’s early life is defined by this contrast between exploitation and kindness.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

The story follows the life of Andreas Egger, a laborer who arrives in the Alps as an orphan at the beginning of the 20th century and is taken in at the farm of Hubert Kranzstocker. The devout but violent farmer sees Egger only as a cheap source of labor; the only one who shows him any care is the elderly Ahnl. After her death, the now-grown Egger takes a job with a work crew building one of the first cable cars on the Weitlahnerkopf. With his savings, he leases a wooden cabin in the mountains for himself and the love of his life. He narrowly escapes an avalanche that buries Marie and the property. During the Second World War, Andreas is conscripted. After spending time as a prisoner of war in the Soviet Union, he returns to the valley only years later. Over time, he witnesses the mountain farming village transform into a modern tourist destination. But he withdraws from the world and lives in solitude, always thinking of his true love, Marie. Toward the end, the elderly Egger looks back positively on the life he has lived.
