A jazz-band leader accused of stealing a hit melody teams up with a friend to hunt for a diamond hidden in a black bra.

The story

Peter Moll, leader and singer of a jazz band, is accused of stealing the melody for his hit song from composer Michael Schröder. After losing his nerve at the court hearing and spending a day in prison, Peter learns from fellow prisoner Gustav that a valuable diamond stolen in a burglary was sewn into a black bra and hidden in Frau Hebe’s corset shop. Hoping to solve his financial problems, Peter and his friend Paul set out to find it. But five black bras have already been sold, and the pair are not the only ones searching: three professional crooks are also after the hidden diamond.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Peter Moll, the leader and singer of a jazz band, is accused of having stolen the melody for his hit song “A Man Doesn’t Always Have to Be Handsome” from the composer Michael Schröder. During the court hearing, where he is ordered to pay damages as a plagiarist, he loses his nerve and has to spend a day in prison. There, he learns from the burly Gustav that, after a burglary, Gustav sewed a valuable diamond into a black bra and hid it in Frau Hebe’s corset shop. Peter sees this as the solution to his financial problems and, together with his friend Paul, sets off to find the precious item of underwear. But by then five black bras have been sold, and they discover that not every woman is happy to have someone rummage through her underwear. Three professional crooks are also hunting for the diamond hidden in the bra. In the end, the stone seems to be lost for good, but Peter and Paul are able to strike up a friendship with two young women, Lore and Liesel. Finally, by a stroke of luck, they do find the long-sought diamond and collect a reward. Composer Schröder also admits, not entirely voluntarily, that he stole the melody and that Peter Moll is the true author of the hit song.
