The story
Josef Nötzli has spent 26 years working as an accountant at a chemical company in Berlin, dreaming of an executive position. A letter of recommendation intended for someone else is misdirected, and Nötzli unexpectedly rises into the job he has long wanted. His newfound status changes his prospects: Hilde Hartmann, his former supervisor, whom he has loved for a decade, begins to notice him. At the same time, the managing director’s wealthy sister sets her sights on him, bringing a new romantic complication as Nötzli’s professional ascent appears to gather momentum.

Josef Nötzli has worked as an accountant at a Berlin chemical company for 26 years. Thanks to a misdirected letter of recommendation, he unexpectedly rises to the executive position he has always dreamed of. Nötzli’s further ascent seems unstoppable. Even his former supervisor, Hilde Hartmann, whom he has been in love with for ten years, now takes notice of him. But the wealthy sister of managing director Brock has also set her sights on him, and Nötzli announces his engagement to her. When the person who was originally meant to benefit from the recommendation turns up, Nötzli is demoted back to his old position.
