A postponed divorce appointment on Mallorca gives estranged spouses an unexpected chance to reconsider their futures.
The story
Photographer Victoria “Vicky” Körner travels to Mallorca to finalize her divorce from Nico and arrange the sale of their jointly owned house in Palma. Although they have lived apart for nearly ten years, the estranged couple still get along. Their plans are disrupted when Nico causes an accident on the way to their appointment with the judge, who is also unavailable after an accident of his own. Forced to remain on the island while they wait to reschedule, Vicky and Nico spend unexpected time together. Meanwhile, selling the house proves difficult: its tenant, marine biologist Javier Maragall, refuses to leave and argues that his lease must be honored.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Photographer Victoria “Vicky” Körner is met at the airport in Mallorca by her soon-to-be ex-husband, Nico. The couple, who intend to divorce, still get along well. Vicky has come to the island to sign the papers for their joint divorce petition and settle the arrangements for selling the house in Palma that she and her husband own together. Vicky and Nico have been living apart for almost ten years. Their daughter Jenny has lived with her mother in Hamburg ever since her parents separated. When Nico causes an accident on the way to see the judge, the couple arrive a little late. The judge’s secretary tells them that the judge was also involved in an accident, so the appointment has to be rescheduled because he is on sick leave. During their unexpected stay in Mallorca, Vicky and Nico grow close again, even though the Michelin-starred restaurateur is in a committed relationship with Lucia Barreto, who is considerably younger than he is. There are also problems with the sale of the house, which is rented by Mallorcan Javier Maragall. The prospective buyer will only purchase it if there is no longer a tenancy in place. The sale stalls because Maragall refuses to move out and insists that the lease he signed must be honored. Maragall is a marine biologist and is also campaigning against greedy real estate agents selling ever more island homes to wealthy foreigners, driving prices up and leaving many locals barely able to find affordable housing. Vicky, who had been quite willing to give her marriage another chance, has to realize, however, that Nico is still as much of a big kid as he was ten years ago and doesn’t take anything seriously. Javier Maragall is Nico’s complete opposite, and Vicky is growing increasingly fond of him. His reserve is refreshing, and his earnestness touches her. Unfortunately, Nico throws a wrench in the works by deliberately damaging the trust that has just begun to develop between Javier and Vicky. Vicky therefore decides to fly back to Hamburg with her daughter and her daughter’s boyfriend, who are also currently on the island, once the divorce papers have been signed. But on their way to the airport, Javier stops the trio’s car and asks Vicky the unusual question of whether Stralsund is beautiful and whether he might like it there. Javier has received an offer from the city and signals to Vicky that he can imagine a future together after all. Vicky says goodbye happily, promising they will see each other again in Stralsund. Nico also has news: his girlfriend Lucia is pregnant.
