A woman travels to Masuria to sell an inherited plot of land, but her plans become complicated by a local farmer who needs it for his business.
The story
Sabine Waldmann travels from Frankfurt to Mikołajki in Masuria after inheriting rights to a piece of land from her recently deceased father. Needing money, she intends to sell it quickly. The swampy lakeside plot is part of Marek’s farm, however, and he needs it for an agritourism expansion. The history of the transfer—security for a loan that has already been spent—complicates their competing claims. Sabine, an autistic woman with Asperger’s, often misunderstands others and struggles to connect, making communication difficult. At first, the neighbor Jakub and Marek’s sister Dorota are among the few who understand her.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Sabine Waldmann travels by train from Frankfurt to Mikołajki in Masuria, where she has inherited rights to a plot of land from her father, who recently died. She wants to sell it as quickly as possible because she needs the money. The plot—a worthless piece of swampy land by the lake—belongs to Marek’s farm, and he needs it for his plans to expand into an agritourism business; he did not sell it to her father, but transferred it to him as security for a loan that has already been spent. Communication is made more difficult by the fact that Sabine, an autistic woman with Asperger’s, shows little empathy, misunderstands things, and generally rubs people the wrong way. At first, only the neighbor Jakub and Marek’s sister Dorota, who cared for Sabine’s father, understand her. Sabine has to abandon her plan when she falls in love with Marek against her will.
