Nadja manages to get Irene away from the event, but the reunion brings her family situation back into focus. Irene is homeless and mentally ill, and Nadja tries to find her somewhere to stay. Full plot (contains spoilers)
Nadja has finally got her life under control—a good, fulfilling job, her own apartment, and a new love. But after years without contact with her mother, Irene suddenly turns up at Nadja’s brother’s wedding, barging back into her life. Nadja manages to steer her abrasive mother away from the celebration. Once again, Nadja has to face her family situation. Irene is homeless and mentally ill. Over the next few days, Nadja once again finds her somewhere to stay. Nadja’s brother Micki and her father, Norbert, want no contact with Irene at all, for their own self-protection. As always, Nadja is the only one in the family who feels responsible for her mother. But Irene refuses to be patronized—least of all by her own daughter. Nadja has to learn to let go of her shame, accept her mother’s fate, and still live her own life. In the end, Nadja gives up a trip with her boyfriend just to get her mother’s life back on a path that offers her a chance of survival.
