The story
Sabine, an aristocrat, chooses to marry her middle-class childhood sweetheart despite marrying beneath her station. When her husband does not return from the First World War for a long time, she slips further into the demi-monde. The account describes a relationship separated by his prolonged absence and Sabine’s increasingly marginal social circumstances, without explaining what has happened to him or how their separation will be resolved.
