The story
Dresden building contractor Walter Steinhoff travels to East Prussia to carry out his late mother’s final wish: scattering her ashes at places tied to important moments in her life. The journey takes him to the front garden of her former home, a bird observatory, a lagoon, and a Königsberg hospital where she worked in 1945. Along the way he meets Nadeschda, a young tour guide, and a mysterious woman who becomes important to him. At Königsberg, the woman reveals that Walter’s understanding of his father may be wrong. Rather than leave at once, Walter decides to remain and find out what happened.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Dresden building contractor Walter Steinhoff is traveling to East Prussia to scatter his late mother’s ashes. He is fulfilling her final wish to have them spread at all the places where she experienced important moments in her life: in the front garden of the house where she lived, at a bird observatory, by the lagoon, and in a Königsberg hospital where she worked in 1945. On his journey, he meets Nadeschda, a young, attractive tour guide, as well as a mysterious woman who comes to mean a great deal to him. When Walter scatters his mother’s ashes in Königsberg, the woman tells him that his father was not at all the man he had always believed him to be. It turns out that the mysterious woman is his sister, and that his father is still alive, living near Königsberg. Walter is shocked and disappointed, but instead of leaving immediately, he now wants to know the whole truth. He finds a witness to the events who confirms that his biological father was a good man. As a Russian officer, he protected the German women working there amid the chaos of war, for which he ultimately had to face serious consequences. Walter apologizes to his sister for thinking that his father had abandoned her. Out of concern for the old man’s health, his children do not tell him the truth. Walter returns to Germany, but wants to stay in touch with his sister and is also determined to show Königsberg to his two children.
