The story
In an industrial suburb in Austria, the merX grocery store is the residents’ only social gathering place and a rare place where young people can meet. The manager and some overzealous police officers try to stop teenagers from loitering there. Lively 14-year-old Julian meets Marko, an outsider two years older, and they quickly bond over their dislike of suburban life. Frustrated by the conformism and stagnation they see around them, the boys refuse to be intimidated by the supermarket management. One summer night, they decide to cross a line and plan to break into the store.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
In an industrial suburb in Austria, the merX grocery store is the residents’ only social gathering place and, despite its boring loudspeaker announcements, irritating customer surveys, and humming cleaning machines, also the only place where young people can get together. But the supermarket manager and a few overzealous police officers are only too happy to spoil the teenagers’ loitering. Here, the lively 14-year-old Julian meets Marko, an outsider two years his senior. They get along immediately, united by their hatred of suburban life. The two teenagers come into conflict with the conformist stagnation that defines the adult world; they refuse to keep letting the supermarket management intimidate them, cross a line one summer night, and plan to break into the supermarket—during which one of the boys is killed.
