Full plot (contains spoilers)

Twenty-seven-year-old Isi left home eight years ago, hoping to work as an illustrator for a publishing house and publish a graphic novel she had written herself. But reality turned out differently. After a few months as an intern, she decides to show her sketches to the publishing-house director—and is promptly told to clear out her desk. Her good friend Lotte, with whom she shares a two-person apartment in Munich, gives her support. But journalist Lotte lands a good job and falls in love with Leo. Since the couple are now constantly giving themselves over to lovemaking in the apartment and beaming with happiness, the annoyed Isi temporarily moves in with musician Klausi and medical student Daniel. Isi is completely unhappy with herself and her life. She feels as though her life is moving backward while everyone around her has already put their dreams into practice. She can’t cope with other people’s happiness, and thinks they are turning into bourgeois conformists. Isi is almost out of money, so she takes a part-time job at a small bicycle shop. Her friendship with Lotte becomes more strained when Lotte tells her she no longer wants to share an apartment, but wants to live with Leo. Desperate for money, Isi pawns a ring she finds at Lotte’s—a family heirloom belonging to Leo. But Isi’s good fortune doesn’t last long: after an expensive bicycle is stolen due to her carelessness, she has to use the money to make a down payment at the bike shop. By this time, Lotte is desperately looking for the ring, but Isi can no longer redeem it because it has been resold. At a party, Isi makes fun of Lotte and Leo by using their face masks to act out suggestive scenes. The footage ends up online, and Isi and Lotte have a furious argument, during which Lotte tells her she is pregnant with Leo’s child. Disillusioned, Isi burns her sketches. Klausi somehow manages to cheer her up with a deep conversation in which he explains what matters in life: you should do what makes you happy. Isi now tries to get her life back on track by working purposefully toward her goals. She keeps things tidy in Klausi’s apartment, goes back to working at the bicycle shop, and works on a new graphic novel in her spare time, one that will be about her own life. When Leo leaves Lotte, Isi confesses what she did with the ring. She then mediates between the two, telling Leo that he should be angry with her about the ring, not with Lotte. Some time later, Isi does manage to finish her graphic novel and send it to publishers. She visits the publishing house where she did her internship and, without saying a word but with deep satisfaction, slaps some of her sketches down on her former boss’s desk in a portfolio.
