In 1950s Buenos Aires, two neighbors fall in love, but their family histories and Friedrich’s political commitments complicate their relationship.
The story
Sulamit Löwenstein and Friedrich Burg grow up as neighbors in 1950s Buenos Aires, become friends, and fall in love. Their families have very different histories: Sulamit’s Jewish family fled to South America before the Holocaust, while Friedrich’s family had belonged to the Nazi Party and went underground in Argentina under a changed name. After Friedrich discovers his father was an SS member and war criminal, he breaks with his family, goes to Germany, and joins the student movement. Sulamit follows him to Frankfurt on a German scholarship, but Friedrich’s political preoccupation leaves little room for their relationship.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Sulamit Löwenstein and Friedrich Burg are children of German émigrés who grow up living across from each other in Buenos Aires in the 1950s. Sulamit’s Jewish family fled to South America before the Holocaust; Friedrich’s family had been part of the Nazi Party and changed their name while going underground in Argentina. Sulamit and Friedrich become friends and fall in love. When Friedrich discovers that his father was in the SS and was a war criminal, he breaks with his family, goes to Germany, and joins the student movement. Sulamit follows him to Frankfurt on a German scholarship, but Friedrich’s political obsession leaves no room for a romantic relationship. She then meets and falls in love with Michael, a lecturer, but continues to follow Friedrich’s activities. Friedrich returns to Argentina to fight the military dictatorship and is arrested and detained during an armed operation. When Sulamit learns that Friedrich has disappeared, she flies to Argentina, finds out where he is being held, and visits him in prison—after a support group for political prisoners has obtained a false passport for her. There, she realizes that she loves Friedrich more than anything, and when she returns to Germany, she breaks up with Michael. After the change of power in Argentina in 1983, Friedrich is released and goes to Patagonia to support the Indigenous people there in their struggle for their land. Sulamit flies to Argentina once again to meet him—the man she still loves.
