A meditation on water’s memory and voice links Chile’s vast seascape to human history and two mysterious buttons found on the ocean floor.

The story

The ocean is presented as a vessel for humanity’s history, carrying the voices of Earth and even of space. Water receives impulses from the stars and passes them on to living creatures. Along Chile’s immense coastline and archipelago, the sea holds the secret of two mysterious buttons found on its floor. The film evokes a supernatural landscape of volcanoes, mountains, and glaciers, alongside the voices of Indigenous Patagonians, early English sailors, and political prisoners. Its central idea is that water has a memory—and, as the film proposes, a voice.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

The ocean contains the history of humanity. The sea holds all the voices of the Earth, as well as those that come from space. Water receives the impulse of the stars and transmits it to living creatures. Water, Chile’s longest border, also holds the secret of two mysterious buttons found on the ocean floor. With its 2,670 miles of coastline and the world’s longest archipelago, Chile presents a supernatural landscape. Its volcanoes, mountains, and glaciers are there. So are the voices of the Indigenous Patagonians, the first English sailors, and political prisoners. They say water has a memory. This film shows that it also has a voice.
