The story
Wolfgang Gotho, a hunchback and morgue attendant at a hospital in the German city of Feldkirch, is shunned by everyone except Frieda, a young woman who is his only friend and whom he loves. When Frieda dies, Gotho steals her body and takes it to scientists studying how to bring the dead back to life. They promise to resurrect her in exchange for his service and help moving their laboratory into some catacombs, since their work has lost the support of the institutions.

Wolfgang Gotho is a hunchback who works as the morgue attendant at a hospital in the German city of Feldkirch. Everyone shuns him except Frieda, a young woman who is his only friend and whom Gotho loves. One day she dies, and Gotho steals her body to take it to scientists studying how to bring the dead back to life. The scientists promise to resurrect Frieda in exchange for Gotho serving them and helping move their laboratory into some catacombs, since their work has lost institutional support. By the time he realizes that the scientists only wanted him so they could exploit him, it will be too late.
