A son remembers his father’s life and work against the backdrop of Colombia’s violent political upheaval.
The story
Set against the violence Colombia experienced in the 1980s and much of the 1990s, the film tells the story of Héctor Abad Gómez through the loving and proud perspective of his son, Héctor Abad Faciolince. As drug lords and paramilitary groups, backed by some political and military sectors, silence critics of the establishment, the film recalls a father’s life and work and the bond he shares with his son. Their enduring love is presented as a profound connection across the years, while the country sinks into a period in which people who speak out face violence.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
The film is set during the violence Colombia experienced in the 1980s and much of the 1990s, the era of powerful drug lords and paramilitary groups that, with the backing of certain political and military sectors, silenced the voices of people critical of the establishment—human rights defenders, university professors, union members, and members and supporters of left-wing movements and political parties. This period serves as the backdrop for telling the story of Héctor Abad Gómez through the loving and proud perspective of his son, Héctor Abad Faciolince, as a kind of tribute to his late father. It shows the unconditional love between a father and son, in both directions, as an almost supernatural bond linking them in a pact that is broken only when one of them dies. Their love grows over the years, becoming a narrative that recalls his father’s life, work, and death, and the profound pain caused by a country sinking into the darkest hours of its history, where anyone who raised a voice in protest was subjected to violence and slaughter. The film is understandable insofar as it highlights the stereotypes of a tragic era that has yet to be fully explored or explained, drawing on the idealized perspective a son has of his murdered father.
