The story

Sabine and Bernd Schröder have already said goodbye to their older sons, and now their youngest is preparing to leave home. The couple expect a freer life, but Sabine struggles to know what to do with her newfound independence. She tries dance classes, attends HSV matches, goes to couples therapy, and hikes across the tidal flats, but these pursuits end in minor disasters. Sabine decides to return to work as a nurse, a choice that displeases Bernd as he becomes increasingly devoted to his electronics company. Their differing priorities lead to a heated argument, leaving Sabine to decide to move out.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Sabine and Bernd Schröder have already had to say goodbye to their older sons in the past, and now their youngest son is also ready to leave the nest. The Schröders’ life with more freedom is about to begin, but appearances are deceptive. Sabine, in particular, doesn’t know what to do with her newfound freedom and tries dance classes, visits to HSV matches at the stadium, couples therapy, and a hike across the tidal flats. All these activities end in minor disasters, and Sabine decides to return to work as a nurse—a decision that does not sit well with her husband Bernd, who is devoting himself more and more to his electronics company. They have a heated argument, and Sabine decides to move out. After some time, the couple realizes that they do have something in common after all. Eventually, Sabine buys plane tickets to an unknown destination. Her husband Bernd has just five minutes to decide whether to join her on this adventure. Without hesitation, he delegates the running of his company and is ready for an adventurous vacation at his wife’s side. But once they arrive at their holiday destination, the couple repeatedly find themselves confronted with the fact that they miss their sons more than they had thought.
