The story

Torsten Södergren has spent thirty years working at a bank while living a typical suburban life with his wife, Berit. When cutbacks cost him his job, the sudden fortune won by a neighbor only deepens his despair. Hoping to impress his former boss and regain his position, Torsten devises a fake bank robbery in which he plans to play the hero. He recruits his son and his daughter’s fiancé, paying them to act as robbers and telling them the bank staff will be taking part in a training exercise. The plan quickly goes awry, leaving Torsten further from his goal than before.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Torsten Södergren (Tomas von Brömssen) works at a bank and leads a typical suburban life with his wife, Berit (Ulla Skoog), but due to cutbacks he is fired after thirty years on the job. That same evening, his neighbor (Per Fritzell) wins 3 million on Bingolotto, which only makes Torsten more depressed about being unemployed. He decides to stage a robbery at the bank where he used to work. The idea is for him to play the hero and stop the robbery, so that his boss, director Callert (Gösta Ekman), will rehire him. Torsten offers his son and his daughter’s fiancé a thousand kronor to play the robbers, telling them that the bank employees are going to have a training exercise in just such a bank robbery. But everything goes wrong: Torsten fails to stop the robbers and ends up even further from getting his job back. By accident, however, he manages to take the loot home, in a bag that is quickly stashed in the family’s wardrobe. Unemployment drives Torsten to the Employment Service, where he meets the upbeat employment officer Jesus (Pablo Vera Nieto). He starts attending courses there, but still cannot find a new job despite his long work experience, which leaves him increasingly depressed. Torsten is about to give up when, during his own suicide attempt, he discovers the money that was accidentally hidden away. He secretly returns the money to the bank by hiding it in a filing cabinet for forms, and also gets his job back through a degree of blackmail. The bank director is fired, but when he finds out that Torsten is the one who “robbed” the bank, he flies into a rage and creates a scene that makes it look as though Torsten tried to murder his former boss. Everything now comes to light, and Torsten is put on trial. When he tells the whole story and explains his reasons for the fake robbery, he becomes a national hero and a symbol of the hopelessness of unemployment. Torsten is acquitted and writes a book about his misadventures, which becomes a huge success. The film ends with him, once again a happy man, celebrating his daughter’s wedding, while the lottery-winning neighbor sits broke on the roof of his house, abandoned by his wife and children as well as his mistress.
