The story
After finally marrying, Isidor Blumentopf sets off by train with his bride for their honeymoon. Following an extravagant wedding feast, they arrive at a hotel, where Isidor hopes at last to be alone with his beloved and consummate the marriage. As interruptions keep disrupting their plans, Isidor’s hoped-for honeymoon solitude becomes increasingly difficult to achieve.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Isidor Blumentopf has finally got married and is about to leave on his honeymoon with his bride. How could he know that over the next few days he would encounter one obstacle after another? First there is an extravagant wedding feast; then the newlyweds set off by train on their honeymoon and end up at a hotel, where Isidor longs for nothing more than to be alone at last so he can consummate the marriage with his beloved. But the limping hotel porter seems to have conspired against the newlyweds, since they are constantly interrupted just as they are about to make love: the hotel employee knocks on their door with clockwork regularity, sometimes to deliver a telegram. Also involved in the chaotic turn of events are a traveling salesman dealing in cheese, a number of women from the village, and finally even the state police, which seriously impedes the young couple’s marital bliss. All this “is a collection of brilliant punchlines that push the bounds of probability, but never make you stop to question it.”
