Georg’s reluctant trip to Crete for a family gathering is strained when his blunt view of his wife’s death and his distance from his children drive them apart.
The story
Georg Weiser is travelling through Greece in his camper van when his children, Susanne and Gerd, invite him to Crete for a small gathering on the anniversary of their mother’s death. He is reluctant and calls his wife’s death a fresh start and a liberation. When it also becomes clear that he knows little about his children’s lives, the family members are driven apart. Georg continues around the island and encounters Sokrates, an actor he nearly ran over shortly before the gathering. After Sokrates’s partner is injured, Georg is asked to take over his role; he travels with Sokrates and meets Alex, Helena and their children at a plantation, where Alex is working on turning sea plastic into building materials.

Georg Weiser is exploring Greece in his camper van when his children, Susanne and Gerd, invite him to Crete for a small family gathering to mark the anniversary of their mother’s death and remember her. Georg is not particularly keen on the idea. When he then describes his wife’s death as a fresh start and a liberation, and it becomes clear that he knows very little about his children’s lives, this drives the family members apart. Georg drives around the island in his camper van and meets the actor Sokrates, whom he nearly ran over shortly before the family gathering. When Sokrates’s partner is injured and Georg is supposed to take over his role, Georg takes the actor with him and meets the Greek man Alex, his wife Helena, and their two children on a plantation. Alex wants to use a start-up company to turn plastic from the sea into building materials. Georg is quite impressed and wants to support the idea. His daughter Susanne, who runs this project through her organization Peace for Nature, is not exactly thrilled by the idea. In town, Georg runs into Karin, a former lover of his who works as a teacher on the island. She gives him her number, and later the two go out to dinner together. Georg discovers that Susanne is having an affair with Alex and is pregnant by him. His son Gerd, meanwhile, feels drawn to Helena. Georg reaches out to his children again and talks to Susanne about the baby, telling her he will help. Gerd also offers his support. Despite all the problems, they decide to go ahead with an important presentation for the start-up. Susanne talks to Helena about everything, but believes that Alex still loves Helena and therefore has not told him about the baby. Alex and Helena stay together. The family repeats the original family gathering, faces the new challenge of welcoming a new family member, and feels close to one another again. Before Georg drives on, he says goodbye to Karin, who tells him they will see each other again. Helena says the same to Gerd as they part.
