The story

While travelling by camper van on Gran Canaria, Georg Weiser has his jacket and identity papers stolen. Chasing the thief, he runs onto a ferry and is detained on La Gomera as a suspected stowaway. His anger does little to help his situation, and he escapes from the police station, becoming a fugitive. Becky, a German dropout, gives him a lift to a plantation where she plans to hide him with her friends. Georg contacts his son, Gerd, and asks him to bring replacement papers. But over dinner, Georg clashes with the group when their prejudices toward the island’s local population become clear.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

While travelling in his camper van on Gran Canaria, Georg Weiser has his jacket stolen, along with all his identity documents. As he chases the thief, he runs onto a ferry, where he is apprehended as a suspected stowaway. At their destination on La Gomera, he is held in pre-trial detention. Georg believes he is in the right and makes no secret of his anger, which does little to improve his situation. At an opportune moment, he escapes from the police station and is now on the run from the police. He meets Becky, a German dropout, who gives Georg a lift in her car to a plantation, where she plans to hide him with her friends. There, Georg is finally able to contact his son, Gerd, and immediately orders him to come to the island and bring replacement papers. Over dinner with the dropouts, their prejudices against the islanders become apparent. Georg dislikes the way they look down on the local population, so he leaves the plantation. He sleeps outdoors nearby and wakes when the thief steals bread from the plantation. Georg takes her side and leaves the plantation with her. Because of an air traffic controllers’ strike, Gerd cannot fly out on time. While waiting, he befriends a stuntman who goes by the name Buffalo. In that short time, Buffalo falls in love with Gerd. Georg walks across the island with Soleil, as the thief is called. She shows him her unfamiliar world, tells him about her background, and lets him see how she gets by with what she has—for instance, she lives in a small cave. Soleil originally came from Senegal and has ended up here as a migrant. These glimpses make Georg reconsider his own life. They are picked up by a policewoman, who does not take them to the station but spontaneously brings them to her home and lets them stay the night. Georg offers to find Soleil a job at his old artificial-turf company. By the next morning, Soleil has already left. Georg meets Gerd at the harbor, but has to make sure they are not spotted by the police. Father and son grow closer again as they talk. Gerd tells him about meeting Buffalo and says he wants to stay friends with him. He points out that his father has no friends at all. At that moment, they spot an African man whom Georg met in prison. Since the man speaks only French, Georg goes looking for Soleil. Eventually, Georg turns himself in to the police with the replacement papers, while Gerd smuggles the young African man off the island in the camper van. After the police let Georg go, he asks Gerd if he would like to accompany him for a little while on the rest of his journey. Beforehand, he has left Soleil a card, writing that his offer still stands.
