The story
During the Battle of Stalingrad in 1942, a Red Army soldier named Vassili Zaitsev becomes a renowned sniper. His exploits are publicized to boost morale, leading to a deadly confrontation with Major Erwin König, a Wehrmacht sniper school director tasked with neutralizing the threat. As the two men engage in a high-stakes duel of wits and marksmanship, they navigate the brutal landscape of the war. The narrative follows their escalating conflict while exploring the personal costs of the conflict, including the involvement of a local militia member, Tania Chernova, and the desperate measures taken by both sides to survive and succeed in the crumbling city.

Vassili Zaitsev, a Red Army soldier, becomes a celebrated sniper during the 1942 Battle of Stalingrad. His fame is used as a propaganda tool, which prompts the German command to deploy Major Erwin König, a skilled sniper instructor, to eliminate him. The two men enter a deadly game of cat and mouse. Along the way, Zaitsev befriends a comrade, Danilov, and both fall for Tania Chernova, a local militia member. The conflict intensifies as König's students and a young double agent, Sacha Filipov, are caught in the crossfire. After a series of near-misses and tactical maneuvers, the duel reaches a climax where Danilov sacrifices himself to reveal his position, leading to a final confrontation. In the end, Zaitsev successfully kills König. Two months later, after the German surrender, Zaitsev finds a wounded Tania in a field hospital.
