A teenager becomes shrunk and entangled in a high-stakes war within a tiny woodland kingdom.
The story
After her mother's death, 17-year-old Mary Katherine (M.K.) moves in with her eccentric scientist father, Professor Bomba, in Danbury, Connecticut. While M.K. dismisses her father's research into the Leafmen—tiny humanoid soldiers who protect the forest from creatures called Boggans—as nonsense, she finds herself thrust into their world. After a chance encounter with the forest's ruler, Queen Tara, M.K. is shrunk and tasked with protecting a mysterious pod. Joined by a group of Leafmen and their allies, she must navigate the dangerous forest to ensure the pod reaches its destination before it falls into the hands of the villainous Boggans.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
M.K. moves to Connecticut to live with her father, Professor Bomba, who studies the Leafmen, a tiny warrior race protecting the forest from the Boggans. While M.K. initially scoffs at his work, she is shrunk by Queen Tara and tasked with transporting a sacred pod to the wizard Nim Galuu. She joins forces with Ronin, a seasoned Leafman, and a rookie named Nod. The group is pursued by Mandrake, the leader of the Boggans, who seeks to use the pod to birth a dark prince. During their journey, Ronin sacrifices himself to allow the others to escape into Boggan territory. In a climactic confrontation at Moonhaven, M.K. uses her father's equipment to distract the Boggans while the others fight to protect the pod. Ultimately, the pod blooms in the moonlight, defeating Mandrake. A new queen is crowned, the bonds between the characters are solidified, and M.K. is returned to her original size, becoming her father's assistant and maintaining contact with her small friends.
