After a forester finds a body in a snow-covered car, a contentious ski-resort expansion plan complicates the investigation.
The story
Forester Saskia Bergelt discovers a snow-covered car at the edge of the forest in Oberwiesenthal, with the body of Franz Kofler inside. Kofler had worked to win local support for a proposed link between ski resorts in Germany and the Czech Republic, a project that requires forest land owned by Friedrich Lieberwirth, who refuses to sell. Chief Inspector Robert Winkler and colleague Karina Szabo take over the investigation as supporters and opponents debate the plan’s economic and environmental effects. Eric Weber, a ski-rental employee with a criminal past and Saskia’s childhood sweetheart, becomes one of Winkler’s suspicions, while Szabo believes Winkler may be biased and pursues other leads.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Forester Saskia Bergelt discovers a snow-covered car at the edge of the forest in Oberwiesenthal, with the body of Franz Kofler inside. Kofler worked as a lobbyist for the ski-lift company and was supposed to persuade the local population to support the planned ski-area link—a project intended to connect the ski resorts on Fichtelberg in Germany and Keilberg in the Czech Republic. A section of forest owned by forestry proprietor Friedrich Lieberwirth is needed to carry out the project. But Lieberwirth flatly refuses to sell. The criminal investigation department takes over the case, represented by Chief Inspector Robert Winkler and his colleague Karina Szabo. Meanwhile, the debate over the ski-area link grows increasingly contentious. Supporters see economic benefits, while opponents fear environmental consequences. Hotelier Henri Schütz is particularly committed to the project, hoping that connecting the ski resorts on Fichtelberg and Keilberg will bring more tourists and overnight guests. He has also hired Eric Weber at his ski-rental shop—a man with a criminal past who once had to leave the Ore Mountains. Eric is also Saskia Bergelt’s childhood sweetheart, which stirs jealousy and doubts in Winkler. He suspects Eric of being involved in the case, but Szabo thinks he is biased and pursues other leads. Another group that may be involved in the case is the environmental activists campaigning against the construction project. Led by Claudia Lindner, they have set up a protest camp in Lieberwirth’s forest and put pressure on the forestry proprietor. When Friedrich Lieberwirth is eventually found dead in his hunting cabin, the course of the investigation changes.
