A landlord offers a noisy family a dream apartment on one condition: they must annoy the demanding neighbors into leaving.

The story

Balz Caduff, a small farmer from Graubünden who has moved to the city, lives with his wife, Vreni, and their six children in an emergency shack. Having made little headway in life, Balz is disliked by some neighbors for drinking away his troubles. Then landlord Frehner offers the family a dream apartment with an attic room on the Zürichberg for 100 francs. The offer has a catch: the noisy Caduffs are expected to annoy their demanding neighbors, Mr. Eidenbenz and his wife, until the couple chooses to move out of their own accord.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Balz Caduff (Zarli Carigiet), married to Vreni (Valerie Steinmann), is a small farmer from Graubünden who has moved to the city. There, he has managed to have six children but has not got anywhere in life. He lives in an emergency shack and is disliked by some of his neighbors because he likes to drown his troubles in alcohol. He is also a blusterer who, with his heavy-handed ways, unfortunately cannot always keep happiness in the home. One day, like a fairy from a fairy tale, the landlord Frehner (Willi Fueter) appears at the Caduffs’ and offers them a dream apartment, complete with attic room, on the Zürichberg for 100 francs. The unsociable catch behind this generous gesture: the noisy Caduffs are supposed to annoy Mr. Eidenbenz (Heinrich Gretler) and his wife (Walburga Gmür), a very demanding couple, so much that they move out of their own accord. But what was planned as a big bang turns into a damp squib: the Caduffs promptly turn into model tenants and soon feel so at home among their neighbors that they even weather smaller, but decidedly loud, crises unscathed.
