The story

On the morning of July 20, German Colonel Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg flies toward East Prussia with his adjutant, Werner von Haeften. At the Wolf’s Lair, the two plan to detonate a bomb in an attempt to assassinate Hitler. Meanwhile, their co-conspirators in Berlin have already launched Operation Valkyrie to take control of the Nazi state. Stauffenberg’s journey and the operation in the capital are part of the same effort to remove Hitler and seize power, as the plot unfolds across two locations.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

The film begins on the morning of July 20, when German Colonel Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg flies toward East Prussia with his adjutant, Werner von Haeften. At the Wolf’s Lair, according to their plan, they intend to detonate a bomb to assassinate Hitler. Although the bomb explodes, Hitler survives the attack. In Berlin, however, their co-conspirators have already launched Operation Valkyrie in order to take control of the Nazi state. Stauffenberg arrives in Berlin soon afterward, unable to believe what Keitel reports from the Führer Headquarters: Hitler is alive. Hitler orders the brutal crushing of the coup, which also claims Stauffenberg and Haeften at the Bendlerblock on the night of July 20–21.
