After a company bankruptcy leaves longtime secretary Ina Becker unemployed and overdrawn, she brings her usual energy to a job-application course, where she meets a rebellious young woman who has little motivation to take part.

The story

After three decades at Mode Pirsch, longtime secretary Ina Becker loses her job when the company goes bankrupt. Divorced and deeply overdrawn, she goes to the employment office for the first time and is offered a job-application course. Ina approaches it with her usual energy, even showing more ambition than the instructor. There she meets Enno, an 18-year-old rebel who is pregnant by a boyfriend uninterested in a relationship and lacks motivation for the course. Meanwhile, former company boss Walter Pirsch has also lost his job and is finding that his contacts do not make it easy to get back to work.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Ina Becker has been divorced for four years and has worked at “Mode Pirsch” for three decades, working her way up through diligence to become head secretary. When the company goes bankrupt, Ina, like all the other employees, suddenly finds herself out of work. She has enjoyed spending money, so her bank account is now heavily overdrawn. For the first time in her life, she has to go to the employment office, where she is offered a job application training course. Full of energy, she tries to complete the course successfully with her usual enthusiasm. She even shows more ambition than the instructor. There she meets 18-year-old rebel Enno, and the two get off to a very rocky start. Enno is pregnant by her boyfriend, but he does not want a relationship at all and would rather spend time with his friends. Unlike Ina, she lacks the motivation to complete the course successfully. Walter Pirsch, the company’s boss, has his own problems. He has been divorced four times, has now lost his job too, and realizes that it is difficult to get back into work somewhere through his contacts. Being a manager was never his thing. He feels sorry for everyone whose lives have been affected by his company’s insolvency. He sees himself as a failure who has failed at life. One evening, as he is about to take his own life with a rope at the company, Ina interrupts him because she is completely broke and wants to take money from the secretarial cash box. The two drink champagne that Walter managed to save from the insolvency administrators, and he learns about the job application training course. This piques his interest in taking part as well. When Enno’s mother throws her out of the apartment, Enno seeks refuge with Ina. Ina looks after the pregnant young woman, accompanies her to the gynecologist, and also visits Enno’s mother. However, her mother has no interest in supporting Enno. Ina then takes Enno in as a housemate. Walter now joins the course too, and a certain attraction develops between him and Ina. Enno notices and tries to bring them together; she also organizes a surprise birthday party for Ina and asks Walter to help with Ina’s debts. But Ina is very upset about this. On top of that, Enno gets a job at a call center that both she and Ina had applied for. After an argument, Enno goes to a club and drinks alcohol. In tears, she calls Ina in the middle of the night, and Ina takes care of her and brings her to the gynecologist. By the end of the course, a few participants have successfully found jobs. This is mainly thanks to Ina’s efforts, so the instructor suggests that she train to become a coach for job application courses. The instructor himself opens a dance school with another participant, while Walter fulfills his dream of becoming a tennis instructor. A year later, Ina moves into an apartment with Enno and the baby. Walter and the other course participants help them move in.
