Full plot (contains spoilers)
The unemployed engineer Fred (Heinz Rühmann) has a job interview at the Ringler Automobile Works, while at the same time he is due in court to swear an oath of disclosure. His friend Willi takes his place at the hearing, but is immediately arrested at the instigation of Justizrat Feldacker, Berlin’s best-known lawyer. Meanwhile, Edith (Dolly Haas), the automobile manufacturer’s spirited daughter, must also appear in court and is sentenced to probation for repeatedly violating traffic regulations. Furious, she speeds off with Feldacker in a sports car and runs Fred down. Although Fred is soon feeling better, he pretends to have lost his memory in order to get revenge on Feldacker. In the meantime, Edith and Fred grow fond of each other, and they also find a way to cover up Edith’s latest involvement in a traffic accident: Fred does not have to testify in court if—he is married to the accused.
